Bikertots was formed and set up in 2015 to help increase the number of children who could ride a bike.  Bikertots is based in Shefford in Bedfordshire and serves mainly the Home Counties.  Bikertots use an accredited coach in Balanceability that has developed a two level programme made up of 12 structured sessions to help children ride solo on a pedal bike.  Bikertots also run sessions for those who want to improve their skills on a pedal bike.

Balanceability is the UK's first accredited 'learn to cycle' programme for aged 2.5 to 6 year olds.  Balanceability combines unique ergonomic balance bikes with a schedule of fun activities that build confidence, spatial awareness and dynamic skills enabling young children to cycle without ever needing stabilisers.

A balance bike is a lightweight, pedal-less chilld's bike which facilitates balance and propulsion.  Children run along whilst seated, push off the ground to create forward movement and use a combination of their feet and hand-operated brake to slow and stop safely.

The main coach, Michelle, has been a teacher for over 15 years and also a School Sports Co-ordinator.  This role saw her both teach and support teachers in the delivery of PE in a range of lower schools.  Michelle has also been trained to deliver Go-Ride bike sessions and Bikeability - both of which she has taught in lower and middle schools.  Michelle has always had a keen interest in bikes, competing in 10 mile time trials at a young age and moving onto mountain bike racing.  Michelle still likes to get out on her bike with her family.

"Being a mum of four I have seen and experienced first hand use of balance bikes.  They were not around for my eldest 2 children and so they did the usual thing of a cute bike with stabilisers that was very heavy as well.  However, when my son was 2 he had a balance bike and could use pedals within the year.  For his third birthday he had a pedal bike - no stabilisers - and could ride it!  I am also more aware of the importance of bikes being lightweight with wheels that move easily on their own. Without these they cannot begin to glide.  The bikes provided at Bikertots are all aluminium.  I am always researching the best affordable bikes."

Bikertots hold structured Balanceability sessions at a local club and at schools during curriculum times and as afterschool clubs. Bikertots also hold Stay and Play sessions in school holidays which is for children age walking - age 5.  This is so that as soon as children can walk they can access ride-ons and begin to experience balance bikes as they grow.  It also gives parents the chance for their children to try out ride-ons and balance bikes before they commit to buying one themselves.  Both the Stay and Play sessions and Balanceability sessions allow children to have fun and to learn in safe environments.  The sessions have access to and use balance equipment as well - a key skill in learning to ride solo on a pedal bike.

Michelle is CRB checked, school first aid trained and an accredited Balanceability coach. Bikertots are fully insured.
